How do I record a patient encounter?
Open the app and tap the record button on the Recordings tab. Place your phone nearby and speak naturally. When finished, tap stop. The recording is saved locally on your device.
How does AI note generation work?
After transcribing a recording, tap "Generate Clinical Note" and choose a template (SOAP, H&P, etc.). Your transcript is automatically de-identified — all patient names, dates, and identifiers are removed — then sent to our secure server to generate a structured clinical note. The original transcript and audio never leave your device.
Is my patient data safe?
Yes. Audio recordings and raw transcripts are stored only on your device and never uploaded. Before any data is sent to the cloud, our AI automatically detects and redacts patient health information (PHI) including names, dates, IDs, and other identifiers. Only de-identified notes are synced.
How do I access my notes on the web?
Once a note is synced, sign in at butternote.com/login with the same account you use in the app. Your de-identified notes appear on the dashboard, ready to copy into your EHR or practice management software.
How do I manage my subscription?
Your subscription is managed through Apple. To change or cancel, go to Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions on your iPhone, or open the App Store and tap your profile icon > Subscriptions. You can cancel anytime and retain access until the end of your billing period.
Can I use ButterNote on Apple Watch?
Yes. The ButterNote Watch app lets you record patient encounters directly from your wrist. Recordings are automatically transferred to your iPhone when in range, where you can transcribe and generate notes.
What languages are supported for transcription?
ButterNote supports transcription in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Vietnamese, and Tagalog. You can also use auto-detect.
How do I delete my account and data?
To delete local data, sign out from the app (Settings > Sign Out), which clears all recordings, transcripts, and notes from your device. To delete your cloud account and all synced data, contact us at support@butternote.com and we will process your request within 30 days.
