The best AI dental scribes in 2026, compared by a dentist

14 products that write dental notes, compared on what they capture, where the note ends up, what they charge and what they do with the recording. Every fact links to the vendor's own website.

info

We make one of these. ButterNote is in the table, so here is how we kept the rest fair. Every claim comes from the vendor's own site or App Store listing, never a review site or another vendor's comparison page. Where a vendor doesn't say, the table says “Not stated” rather than guessing. And we say plainly where ButterNote is the wrong choice.

Three ways AI writes dental notes

“AI dental scribe” usually means the first. The other two are worth knowing about.

hearing

Ambient scribe

A microphone listens to the whole appointment and the software writes the note from the conversation. The least work for you, but the patient is recorded, so you need consent, and you are trusting the vendor with that audio. Ask how long they keep it.

mic

Dictation

You talk through the visit after the patient leaves, or call findings out as you go, and the software turns that into a structured note. Nobody else is recorded, but you still have to remember and say everything.

touch_app

Click-build

You tap the visit type, procedures and findings, and the software writes the sentences. No audio at all, and every line is something you chose. Fastest for routine procedures; slower for a long, unusual exam.

Vendor by vendor

ButterNote

Ours, so weigh this one accordingly. Works with any PMS with no integration to set up: copy, paste, done. Transcription runs on your phone, watch or browser, so the audio never leaves your device, and only de-identified text is sent to write the note. No voice perio charting.

Denti.AI Scribe

The published plan is OneStop Clinical, which bundles the scribe with voice perio and X-ray analysis; there is no scribe-only plan on the pricing page. Supports 50+ spoken languages and writes referral letters.

Bola AI

Can draft insurance narratives from the encounter.

Overjet Voice

Perio and hard-tissue charting are reviewed on an odontogram before anything reaches the PMS. Its trust center names the services that process recordings: Deepgram for transcription, OpenAI and Anthropic for note writing.

Sources: Overjet Voice, Trust center

Pearl Voice

Perio charting covers pocket depths, recession, bleeding, mobility and furcation, and Pearl says its notes support CDT coding.

VideaHealth Voice Notes

Launched October 2025. The two capture modes are useful if some patients would rather not be recorded: dictation mode records only you.

Sources: Voice, Launch

Archy Scribe

Only an option if you run, or move to, Archy as your practice management system. Notes come pre-filled with medical history, the day’s CDT codes and the treatment plan. The only vendor here that states how long it keeps recordings: 7 days.

DentScribe

Built for chairside use on a phone, and publishes straight into the PMS without copy and paste. Hosted on AWS.

Sources: Home, FAQ

Avora

Writes into the fields your team already uses rather than pasting a block of text. Offers retention and deletion controls, and says patient data is not used to train its AI.

Dentistry Dashboard

UK-first, with a separate US version. Says audio is never stored.

Sources: AI Dental Notes, US pricing

DigitalTCO

Built around talking after the visit, so there is no microphone on your patients unless you choose to record. Whether audio is kept is a per-appointment choice.

Sources: Home, Pricing, Security

Kiroku

UK and Australia focused, writing to your own templates. Says audio is never stored, only the written notes.

Sources: Kiroku AI, Pricing, Compliance

Heidi Healthgeneral medical

A general medical scribe with dental templates (extractions, restorations, crown prep, hygiene). Says it works alongside your charting software, not instead of the odontogram. Hosts US data in the US.

Commure Scribegeneral medical

A general medical scribe with a dentistry page. Suggests CDT and ICD-10 codes. Its App Store listing shows a different price ($129) from its website.

Ask these before you sign anything

Whichever you choose, including ours. Most of the answers are not on the websites.

  1. 1Is the audio kept after the note is written, and for how long?
  2. 2Which outside companies process the recording and the transcript?
  3. 3Is the price per clinician, per install, or per location, and what is the contract term?
  4. 4Does your integration support our PMS and version, and does it write into the chart fields or paste a block of text?
  5. 5What happens to our notes and recordings if we cancel?

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI dental scribe?

It depends on what you need it to do. If the note has to land in Dentrix, Eaglesoft or Open Dental without copy and paste, or you want hands-free perio charting, look at the dental-specific vendors with PMS integration, most of which only quote after a demo. If you want a published monthly price and are happy to paste the note across, the field is smaller and much cheaper. If you are in the UK or Australia, choose one that prices in your currency and names your PMS.

How much does an AI dental scribe cost?

Of the dental-specific products that publish a price, as of 13 October 2026: ButterNote is $39.99 a month per clinician, Dentistry Dashboard $79 a month per dentist, DigitalTCO $120 a month per clinician, and Denti.AI $399 a month per location for a bundle that includes the scribe. Bola, Overjet, Pearl, VideaHealth, DentScribe and Avora publish no price.

Do AI dental scribes integrate with Dentrix, Eaglesoft and Open Dental?

Several do: Denti.AI Scribe, Bola AI, Overjet Voice, Pearl Voice, VideaHealth Voice Notes, DentScribe and Avora say they integrate with or write into those systems. Others, including ButterNote, Dentistry Dashboard, DigitalTCO, Kiroku and Heidi Health, need no integration at all: they work with any PMS, and you paste the finished note in. Nothing to install and nothing to wait on, for the cost of one paste.

What is the difference between an AI dental scribe and AI dental notes?

People use the terms interchangeably. Strictly, a scribe listens to the appointment and writes the note for you, while AI dental notes covers any software that writes the note: ambient scribes, dictation tools, and click-build tools that write the sentences from what you select.

Can I use a general medical scribe like Freed for dental notes?

You can, but check what it knows about dentistry. Freed, DeepCura and S10.AI have no dentistry product page; DeepCura’s own comparison article lists no structured perio charting, no CDT suggestions and no dental PMS integration for its product. Heidi and Commure do have dental pages and dental templates.

What happens to the recording of the appointment?

It varies more than anything else on this page, and most vendors do not say. Archy keeps recordings for 7 days. Kiroku and Dentistry Dashboard say audio is never stored. DigitalTCO lets you choose per appointment. ButterNote transcribes on your phone, watch or browser, so the audio never leaves your device, and only de-identified text is sent to write the note.

Who wrote this comparison?

The dentist who built ButterNote, which is one of the products in the table. That is why every fact links to the vendor’s own page, and why the page says where ButterNote is the wrong choice.
